More Snow Than Expected Today for Long Island - Up to 5 Inches to Fall by Tonight

Written by Cait Russell  |  10. December 2013

Update - 12:30 PM - Due to hazardous road conditions, numerous schools across Long Island are letting out classes early today, and canceling afternoon and evening activities. For the latest updates, visit our School Closures Page.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and Hazardous Weather Outlook for all of Long Island due to the moderate to heavy snowfall, and hazardous conditions that the winter weather can create. The Advisory & Weather Outlook will be in effect until 5PM this evening, and it is now predicted that LI will receive between 3 and 5 inches of accumulation today - more than originally predicted. This additional snow accumulation is  due in part to the fact that temperatures will be lower throughout the afternoon - it was originally predicted that Long Island would experience slushy rains throughout the afternoon.

The NWS also issued a Special Weather Statement today pertaining to Long Island and the New York Metro Area, warning that the snow will cause for poor visibility on the road, and create slippery and hazardous driving conditions. They urge travelers to drive slowly and carefully, and take extra care when on the roads today. As it continues to snow this morning and accumulation begins to build, it is expected that the road conditions will continue to deteriorate, although trucks can be seen clearing and salting local roads in an effort to make them safer for drivers.

Currently, only a handful of schools have canceled afternoon & evening classes for today,  closings are always a possibility when snow begins to accumulate here on Long Island. For up to date information on local School Closings & Delays, click here.
