On December 1, Brookhaven Town Clerk Kevin LaValle (third from right) visited the William Floyd Estate in Mastic Beach to record a new “Talking History with the Town Clerk” episode. He was joined by Supervisor Dan Panico (second from right), Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig (third from left), Legislator Jim Mazarrella (second from left), Town Historian Barbara Russell (left), and National Park Service staff, Elizabeth DeMaria (right).

The William Floyd Estate is not only a cornerstone of Brookhaven’s history but also a significant chapter in our nation’s beginnings. William Floyd’s legacy lives on prominently, through the William Floyd Parkway, one of the busiest roadways in our Town, and the William Floyd School District, where hundreds of students proudly graduate each year. Yet, many are surprised to learn that William Floyd was the only Suffolk County signer of the Declaration of Independence, a remarkable distinction that connects our community directly to the foundation of our country.

In this episode, viewers will learn about Brookhaven’s early roots, the life and legacy of William Floyd, and the history of the estate that still stands today.

Town Clerk Kevin LaValle said, “I’m especially excited for this episode to be released on Wednesday, December 17th, William Floyd’s birthday. Thanks to Legislator Jim Mazzarella, who recognized Floyd’s enduring significance, this date is now officially celebrated as William Floyd Day throughout Suffolk County. Stay tuned for this episode!”

Supervisor Dan Panico said, “The William Floyd Estate is a powerful reminder of Brookhaven’s place in American history. William Floyd’s service, sacrifice, and leadership continue to inspire, especially as we enter the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I encourage residents to visit the Estate and learn more about the legacy of the only Suffolk County signer of this defining document.”

Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig said, “The constituents of the Tri Hamlet community take great pride in William Floyd, one of our nation’s Founding Fathers. Designating December 17th as William Floyd Day, is a fitting tribute to William Floyd’s legacy and his lasting impact on the surrounding community.”

Legislator Jim Mazzarrella said, “It was an honor to stand at the historic William Floyd Estate with the Town of Brookhaven to reflect on the life and legacy of one of America’s true patriots. With the passage of my legislation designating December 17th as ‘William Floyd Day’ in Suffolk County, we are ensuring that future generations understand the extraordinary sacrifices made by the only Suffolk County signer of the Declaration of Independence. As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, this designation not only celebrates William Floyd’s enduring contributions to our country, but also reaffirms our commitment to preserving and sharing the rich history rooted right here in our own community.”

This episode will be released on Wednesday, December 17th, on Channel 18, the Brookhaven webpage at Brookhavenny.gov/TalkingHistory, and on the Town Clerk’s social media accounts.
