AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT THURSDAY The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties... Richmond...Kings...Queens...New York...Bronx... Westchester...Rockland...Nassau...Suffolk. from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Thursday. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone . The Air Quality Index...or AQI...was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value...the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated...the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young...and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Man Arrested After Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash in Brentwood

Suffolk County Police arrested a man today after a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Brentwood last night.

Brentwood, NY - December 8th, 2013 - Suffolk County Police arrested a man today after a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Brentwood last night.
 
Santos Amaya was walking across Islip Avenue when he was struck by a 2007 Toyota Corolla driven by Fredy Pavon at 10 p.m. Amaya, 31, of Central Islip, was transported via Brentwood Legion Ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead. Pavon left the scene of the crash and was arrested a few hours later after his damaged vehicle was located.
 
Vehicular Crime Unit detectives charged Pavon, 47, of Brentwood, with Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting Involving A Fatality. He will be arraigned today at First District Court in Central Islip.
 
The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
