Hempstead Driver Arrested for Intoxication and Possession of a Handgun

Hempstead, NY - December 7, 2014 - Third Squad detectives report the details of an arrest for driving while intoxicated and possession of a handgun that occurred in Hempstead on Saturday, 12/06/14 at 4:10 A.M.

According to detectives, Devon Church, 23, of 89 Cliff Ave., Hempstead, while operating a 2005 Toyota Camry, struck a utility pole on Kennedy Ave./Brown Ave.  Hempstead Police officers along with Nassau County Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene, where it was determined that the defendant was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.  At the time of his arrest, the defendant was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun, which was recovered from his pants pocket.  Additionally, a glass jar containing Marijuana was recovered from the defendant’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Church is being charged with Criminal Possession of Weapon 2nd Degree, DWI, and Unlawful Possession Marijuana.  He was arraigned on Saturday, 12/06/14 in First District Court, Hempstead.
