Northport Woman Killed in House Fire

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Squad detectives are investigating a house fire that killed a woman in Northport this morning.

Northport, NY - December 5, 2014 - Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Squad detectives are investigating a house fire that killed a woman in Northport this morning.

Second Precinct police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a fire, located at 52 Theron Place, at approximately 7:40 a.m. The residents of the home, Ellen Carberry and her son John Carberry, were able to exit the house. Ellen Carberry, 64, went back into the home, possibly to rescue two cats, and was overcome by the fire. She was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. John Carberry, 30, was not injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but it appears to be accidental.

Northport, East Northport, Centerport and Greenlawn Fire Departments extinguished the fire.
