Patchogue Man Injured During Police-Involved Shooting, Officials Report

Patchogue, NY - December 3, 2018 - Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a police-involved shooting that injured a Patchogue man on Monday, December 3.
 
A Fifth Precinct police officer was in the parking lot of the Fifth Precinct when he heard a call over the radio at 2:15 a.m. of a description of a suspect involved in a commercial burglary in Patchogue. Within minutes, the officer, who was off-duty and driving home, observed a man fitting the suspect description walking on Waverly Avenue, near East 3rd Street. 
 
The officer, who was still in uniform, approached the man who became combative and began assaulting the officer. The officer deployed his Taser twice but it was ineffective. During the altercation, the man tackled the officer to the ground. The officer shot the man once in the torso.
 
The man, 33, was transported to a hospital where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The officer, a five-year veteran of the Suffolk County Police Department, was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
 
The investigation is continuing.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
