Zeldin, EPA, and State and Local Officials to Announce $2.04 Million in Funding for Long Island Sound Restoration
Patchogue, NY - December 1, 2017 - On Monday, December 4, 2017, at 11:30 a.m., Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) will join EPA Regional Administrator Pete Lopez, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Regional Director Carrie Meek Gallagher, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Northeast Regional Director Amanda Bassow, and other state and local officials at the Flax Pond Marine Laboratory to announce 31 grants, totaling $2.04 million, that will be awarded to local governments and community groups. The grants will support projects that will continue to improve water quality, restore natural habitats, enhance living resources, and educate and involve the public in protecting and restoring the Long Island Sound.
“The Long Island Sound is a precious feature of our life, culture, and economy, one that affects the livelihoods of thousands of Long Islanders, as well as our local recreation and tourism industries,” Congressman Zeldin said ahead of the announcement. “Protecting and restoring this critical waterway, which has suffered from pollution and overdevelopment over so many years, is so important to improving our area’s water quality, restoring our area’s natural habitats, and improving Long Islanders’ quality of life. These grants, totaling $2.04 million, are a critical component of preserving the Long Island Sound for generations to come.”
