Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Stuart Cameron are announcing safety measures the department is taking throughout the holiday season in an effort to ensure the safety of Suffolk County residents and visitors.

 

To protect holiday shoppers, officers and auxiliary police will be increasing patrols around business districts and shopping centers throughout the season. Additionally, police will monitor traffic conditions during popular shopping days.

 

The department will also be performing increased patrol checks at religious institutions during holy holidays. Members of the department will meet with leaders of religious institutions to discuss appropriate security measures for their congregations.

 

Keeping Suffolk County roadways safe and free of impaired drivers continues to be a high priority for members of the department. There will be additional DWI patrols throughout the county during the entire holiday season with an emphasis during Thanksgiving weekend, and the week of Christmas and New Year’s. The department will take a zero-tolerance approach to anyone who chooses to drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

 

"Thanksgiving eve has become a popular night out for residents of all ages, but if you plan to drink during the upcoming holiday festivities, use common sense and plan a way home. We have seen far too many needless DWI tragedies that end lives, rip families apart, or result in debilitating injuries," Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. "The men and women of the Suffolk County Police Department have zero tolerance for anyone drinking and driving in Suffolk County and will be out in full force to ensure the safety of our roadways."
