Suffolk County Fire Rescue Emergency Service Dispatcher Assists in Delivering Baby

Yaphank, NY - November 27, 2018 - Emergency Service Dispatcher Stacey Scheiner of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services assisted in the at home delivery of a baby in Yaphank.
 
At 9:22 this morning the baby’s parents called reporting continuous contractions from the mother. Scheiner assessed the emergency and with the father’s assistance determined that the birth was imminent. 
 
A responder from the Mastic Beach Ambulance arrived on scene as the baby was delivered and confirmed a healthy baby boy was delivered at 9:27 
 
The family was transported to University Hospital at Stony Brook without incident. 
 
Scheiner is a past volunteer EMT at Mastic Ambulance and a twenty-year veteran dispatcher at Suffolk Fire Rescue. This is her third baby delivered as a dispatcher. 
 
All dispatchers at Suffolk County Fire Rescue are required to have a minimum training level of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and many are advanced life support providers.
 
The department handles approximately 300,000 emergencies a year and assists in the delivery of approximately half dozen babies annually.
