It’s going to be a very blustery day here on Long Island, no matter where it is on the Island you reside. According to the National Weather Service, Brooklyn, Queens and Nassau counties will be experiencing hazardous strong winds. Winds South will reach 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts 45 to 50 miles per hour. Suffolk County is facing a similar situation with strong hazardous winds South 20 to 25 miles per hours with gusts up to 50 miles per hour.

A Dense Fog Advisory is also in place for Suffolk County until 7 p.m. tonight.

Windy weather conditions of this magnitude can cause power lines, tree limbs and branches to fall down. A wind advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 miles per hour, or gusts 46 to 57 miles per hour are occurring or expected to occur. These conditions can also make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

The wind advisory today will be in effect until 1 p.m.

Fishers, boaters and mariners should be advised that a Gale Warning has also been issued at this time. Certain areas of Long Island’s surrounding waters, like Moriches Inlet, Montauk Point and Fire Island Inlet, will be under Gale Warning until 1 a.m. on Tuesday. Port Jefferson, Long Island Sound, Peconic and Gardiners Bays and South Shore bays from Jones Inlet through Shinnecock Bay will be under Gale Warning through this evening.

Operating a water vessel in Gale Warning weather conditions requires experience and a properly equipped vessel. Mariners and vessels that do not fall under those requirements should steer clear of the waters until the warning has ended.
