Shoreham, NY - November 21, 2016 - On Wednesday, November 16th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker and the Shoreham Civic Organization hosted an Emergency Preparedness Training at the North Shore Public Library. The training, sponsored by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Citizen Preparedness Corps, attracted over 75 residents who learned how to prepare for, respond to, and recover quickly from a variety of storm and disaster situations.

“As severe weather events become more frequent and more extreme, it is important that all Long Islanders know what to do in case of an emergency,” said Legislator Anker. “We must be prepared for all types of natural, manmade, and technological disasters by developing an emergency plan with our families, preparing emergency supplies, and knowing what resources are available in case of an emergency.”

At the training, attendees were briefed by members of the National Guard and the NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services on how to prepare emergency supplies, how to keep pets safe, how to develop an escape plan, and what to do during a variety of disaster situations. Attendees were also given a certificate of completion and a free emergency kit that included a durable backpack, first aid kit, duct tape, water, food, work gloves, blanket, flashlight, and radio.
