U.S. News & World Report Places The Shores at Peconic Landing among Nation's Best in Skilled Nursing Care

Greenport, NY - November 16, 2016 - The Shores at Peconic Landing has been named one of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Nursing Homes” for a sixth consecutive year, recognizing it among the top 13 percent of nursing homes nationwide.

U.S. News & World Report rates nursing homes as part of its “Nursing Home Finder” decision tool, a web-based tool used to help individuals in need of temporary or long-term skilled nursing care. On any given day some 1.4 million people — most of them 65 and older — are receiving care in a nursing home, whether it be rehabbing after surgery or a hospital stay, or receiving care as a long-term resident.

Those earning the publication’s top honor are the select few to have scored a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency tasked with setting and enforcing standards for nursing homes. The agency evaluates federal data on more than 15,000 nursing homes across the country each year, gauging health and safety standards, nurse staffing and care times, as well as the quality of care patients receive during a stay at each institution.

The Shores has maintained that five-star rating for the past 24 consecutive quarters, a task that is becoming more challenging as the federal agency is working to strengthen its nursing home evaluation program. This year the agency incorporated new methodology “to give users a better sense of how homes perform over time and to determine whether a home provides appropriate rehabilitation services,” according to the report.

The new methodology resulted in a 41 percent decrease in the number of top performers over last year when about 20 percent of the nation’s nursing homes earned the five-star distinction, the report states. The Shores Care Center rating can be viewed here.

"Every year we strive to improve upon the information we offer to our users making critical decisions," says Ben Harder, Chief Health Analyst. "With our new methodology, we have taken several steps to ensure that nursing homes that consistently perform well are highlighted."

Gregory J. Garrett, EVP and Administrator of Health Services for Peconic Landing said “it is exciting to be recognized U.S. News & World Report for what is now a sixth consecutive year. Our team of professional caregivers is truly amazing and this accomplishment would be possible without their dedication to the members and our mission.”

In 2016, Peconic Landing expanded its Skilled Nursing care offerings, opening the doors to a new 17-suite short-term rehabilitation center known as The Bluffs at Peconic Landing. Designed with a state-of-the-art outdoor therapy garden, a common area with a country kitchen and a dining room; the new addition now allows the organization to care for members of the greater community, providing another short-term rehabilitation option for the general public.

“With the growing population of North Fork residents age 65 or older, there is a true demand for quality care services,” said Robert J. Syron, president and CEO of Peconic Landing. “We are excited to offer these new resort-style accommodations and open up our doors to the greater community.”

The expansion also included a makeover for The Shores at Peconic Landing, with all resident accommodations and amenities receiving a complete refresh. The enhancements have helped to improve quality of life for members and staff.
