Copiague Woman Arrested for Assault, Reckless Endangerment & Driving After Striking Utility Pole

Hemptead, NY - November 15, 2015 - The Homicide Squad reports the arrest of a Copiague woman for Assault as a result a serious vehicle accident that occurred on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at 3:46 a.m. in Hempstead.

According to detectives, Cristela Umana-Herrera, 19, was operating a 1993 Acura westbound on Front Street in an unauthorized speed contest with a second unknown vehicle beginning at High Street. Herrera lost control of her vehicle which struck a utility pole on the northwest side of W. Orchard Street at Front Street. The vehicle was occupied by a female, 20 in the front passenger seat and a male, 29 in the rear right passenger seat. Both passengers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Herrera was admitted with a serious head injury.  The second vehicle continued without stopping. Herrera’s vehicle was impounded for brake and safety checks.

Herrera is charged with Assault 3rd degree, (2) two counts of Reckless Endangerment 2nd degree, Reckless Driving, Operating a Motor Vehicle with suspended registration, Illegal Speed Contest, and additional Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations. Herrera was issued a desk appearance ticket returnable on December 24, 2015 to First District Court in Hempstead.
