Hemptead, NY - November 15, 2015 - The Homicide Squad reports the arrest of a Copiague woman for Assault as a result a serious vehicle accident that occurred on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at 3:46 a.m. in Hempstead.

According to detectives, Cristela Umana-Herrera, 19, was operating a 1993 Acura westbound on Front Street in an unauthorized speed contest with a second unknown vehicle beginning at High Street. Herrera lost control of her vehicle which struck a utility pole on the northwest side of W. Orchard Street at Front Street. The vehicle was occupied by a female, 20 in the front passenger seat and a male, 29 in the rear right passenger seat. Both passengers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Herrera was admitted with a serious head injury.  The second vehicle continued without stopping. Herrera’s vehicle was impounded for brake and safety checks.

Herrera is charged with Assault 3^rd degree, (2) two counts of Reckless Endangerment 2^nd degree, Reckless Driving, Operating a Motor Vehicle with suspended registration, Illegal Speed Contest, and additional Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations. Herrera was issued a desk appearance ticket returnable on December 24, 2015 to First District Court in Hempstead.
