New Law: Being Intoxicated in Public is a Crime in Babylon

Written by Wendy L  |  08. November 2013

We know going behind the wheel to drive while intoxicated is a crime, well now you can add public drunkenness as well if you’re in the town of Babylon.

On Thursday, the Babylon Town Board approved a bill that made into law that appearing intoxicated in public or at cabarets and dance halls is a misdemeanor.

There was a unanimous vote of approval for the bill.

Those in violation as first-time offenders may receive a fine ranging from $250 to $1,000 or up to 90 days of imprisonment. Repeat offenders can face fines of up to $5,000.

Public drunkenness is measured based on anyone with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent or more.

The Town also has consumption and open-container laws in place already.
