Mastic Beach, NY - November 6, 2015 - The William Floyd High School Counseling Center recently held a very successful On-Site College Admissions Day - the first of the new school year – which resulted in 90 seniors receiving on-the-spot acceptance letters to Suffolk County Community College (SCCC).  Three SCCC recruiters were available to meet with seniors to evaluate their transcripts and applications and speak to students about the courses of study available.

Sarah Hart, a senior enrolled in the Culinary Arts program of the Hospitality Services Academy at William Floyd High School and who plays the violin, was ecstatic about her acceptance. She hopes to pursue the Culinary Arts at SCCC and one day possibly become a chef or a baker.

“Suffolk Community College On-Site admissions events are always exciting,” said Gerilyn Smith, Director of Student Services, William Floyd School District. “Students are enthusiastic about gaining admission into college and their acceptance demonstrates that their hard work has paid off.”

As part of the district’s college and career awareness initiative, the Counseling Center hosts numerous on-site admissions events throughout the school year including a larger one with approximately 10 regional colleges and universities available to meet with students. Then in April, the district hosts a College & Career School Fair for students in all grade levels with representatives in attendances from more than 85 colleges, universities and technical schools to talk about their institution’s academic offerings, financial aid, campus life and more.

Additionally, to assist with the financial aid process, juniors, seniors and their families are invited to a Financial Aid Workshop on Tuesday, November 17 at 6 pm at William Floyd High School Room 177. A college financial aid counselor will be on hand to provide a tutorial on the financial aid process.
