Shirley, NY - November 5, 2013 - Students in Kimberly Bahr’s kindergarten class at William Floyd Elementary School recently took a virtual field trip to “Kamp Kenan,” a reptile conservation and breeding facility located in south Florida run by former professional BMX rider Kenan Harkin.

In preparation for the “field trip,” which was made possible through Skype, Mrs. Bahr’s students researched the various types of reptiles and watched videos about Kamp Kenan on YouTube. They used this research to prepare questions about reptiles and the operations of the facility. During the field trip, students learned about a variety of reptiles, including lizards, snakes, tortoises, turtles and the American alligator.

“This year we put an emphasis on 21^st century skills in the classroom,” said Keith Fasciana, Principal, William Floyd Elementary School, who noted that 20 of his teachers received web cams to use in their classroom for these types of projects that help students gain a global awareness.
