History: Old Time Photos of Shelter Island

We asked the Shelter Island Historical Society to dig into the archives to find us some old-timey photos that showed the way things used to be.

The photo is of the old South Ferry. Before this boat there were sailboats that pulled or pushed small barges to the South Fork at North Haven.

The old Manhanset House. It was built in 1873 and partially destroyed by fire in 1896. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1898 and struck by lightning and totally destroyed in 1910. This photo is dated 1896.

Photo of mail delivery from Greenport. These people are standing on the bay between Greenport and Shelter Island Heights where there would normally be a ferry running.

Photo from when one of the only ways to preserve food on the island was an ice chest.  The ice was cut by crews of men from a fresh water pond known as "Ice Pond" and delivered in this wagon much like the oil deliveries we get today.
