ShopRite Teams Up with Paramount Rx During National Diabetes Awareness Month to Host Free Glucose Screenings

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  27. October 2016

Long Island, NY - October 24, 2016 - ShopRite is joining forces with prescription benefits manager Paramount Rx this November for National Diabetes Awareness Month, hosting free blood glucose screenings at select ShopRite locations. In an effort to address the growing diabetes epidemic, ShopRite’s registered dietitians will assist with glucose-level tests and share expert tips with residents to help prevent and treat the disease.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, more than 29 million Americans have diabetes, representing nearly 10 percent of the population. One in four of these individuals are unaware they have the disease and do not seek out medical treatment. Another 86 million people over 20 are “prediabetic” – meaning they have a greater risk of becoming diabetic.

Early detection helps prevent prediabetes from progressing to diabetes, and those who are inflicted gain a better quality of life by increasing their understanding of the disease. The screenings made possible by ShopRite and Paramount Rx are designed to help individuals and families identify diabetes risk factors while also mitigating the potential medical expenses of diabetes-related healthcare.

“ShopRite is committed to improving the total health and wellness of its customers,” said Natalie Menza, Manager of Health and Wellness at ShopRite. “Community events like these give us the unique opportunity to raise awareness and help our customers make informed, educated lifestyle choices when it comes to their preventing and treating diseases such as diabetes.”

ShopRite provides a full suite of complimentary health and wellness offerings to its customers, including a full range of better-for-you products, flu shots, blood pressure monitoring stations, and (in many locations), dedicated in-store registered dietitians who are on-hand to assist customers with their nutritional needs via personal consultations, store tours, educational services, group classes and more.

“Diabetes is a pervasive disease, but a simple blood glucose test can provide crucial information to at-risk individuals,” said Ken Hammond, R.Ph and CEO of Paramount Rx. “Together with ShopRite, we want to give local residents access to the expertise and resources they need to take care of themselves and their families.”

Paramount Rx is proud to work with ShopRite to create an easier path to affordable prescriptions. Through its Community Cares Rx prescription discount card, individuals and families receive up to 20 percent off brands and 70 percent off generic prescriptions.
