This summer rap fans mourned the passing of Biz Markie, the Long Island-raised MC who had a smash hit with “Just a Friend” in 1989. Biz Markie’s trademark voice and partially spoken rap was his signature style. The rapper - who was born Marcel Hall in Harlem, NY - was a former Patchigue resident.
Recently, the Village of Patchogue dedicated a street in memory of the hip-hop star. South Street, which is near the home where the rapper lived as a teen, was dedicated as Biz Markie Way in his memory.
Biz Markie also appeared in films, and regularly on the children’s television program “Yo Gabba Gabba.”
During a ceremony, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine spoke of Biz Markie’s career and his dedication to community service.
A statement released by the Town said that Romain concluded his comments saying that Biz Markie was more than “just a friend,” referring to his hit song.
