NCPD: Man Throws Rock at Car, Then Beats and Robs Female Driver After She Pulls Over

Levittown, NY - October 24, 2018 - Second Squad detectives report the arrest of an East Meadow man for Robbery that occurred on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 3:30 pm in Levittown.
 
According to detectives, the female victim, 36, was operating her Chrysler Town and Country westbound in the vicinity of 2665 Hempstead Turnpike when she observed an unknown male throw a large rock at her vehicle. The rock struck the victim’s vehicle causing damage to the front passenger’s side headlight and hood. The victim pulled over, exited her vehicle and questioned the subject’s behavior.
 
The female was on her cell phone with 911 when the male approached the victim and punched her in the face. The victim fell to the ground and the subject took her cell phone from her hand. The subject again punched the victim in the face, causing her to lose consciousness. The victim regained consciousness and attempted to get up when the male continued striking her in the face. At this time, a group of individuals began yelling at the subject and he fled the scene. The victim immediately went to her car to make sure her daughter was safe. She was seated in the rear of the minivan.
 
The victim suffered a leg injury, bloody nose, multiple lacerations to her head and face and numerous lumps and bruises to her forehead. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment. It was later determined the victim suffered a concussion.
 
While canvassing of the area, officers located a male fitting the description of the subject.  Officers were conducting an investigation when James Martins, 34, became uncooperative and refused to comply with the officer’s commands. Martins grabbed one officer’s shirt and tore off his badge. Martins continued to disregard the officer’s commands and struck him in the face. Martins continued to resist arrest before being subdued. A male witness, 49, assisted the police until he was handcuffed.
 
A male officer suffered a head injury and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
 
Defendant Martins is charged with Robbery 2nd Degree, Assault 2nd Degree, Assault 3rd Degree, two (2) counts of Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree, two (2) counts Criminal Mischief 4th Degree, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Resisting Arrest and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. He will be arraigned Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at First District Court, Hempstead.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
