MTA: Buses Substitute for Montauk Branch Trains

Montauk, NY - October 24th, 2014 - For four days next week, the Long Island Rail Road will perform track inspections on the Montauk Branch. Crews will use an advanced Sperry rail car that can detect metal fatigue and faults beneath the surface of the steel rails.

As crews perform the work, buses will replace select trains. Over the four days, 26 trains will be replaced in whole or in part by buses. Customers should plan to build in additional travel time as described below and in a special timetable.

Tuesday, October 28 – Babylon to Patchogue
On Tuesday, October 28, buses will replace six midday trains that operate between Babylon and Patchogue or Speonk and arrive or depart from Babylon between 9:26 a.m. and 11:35 a.m.

Westbound
Buses will replace trains that originate in Patchogue at 9:35 a.m., 10:35 a.m., and 11:35 a.m. Customers who board at Patchogue, Sayville, Oakdale, Great River, Islip and Bay Shore will catch buses that will connect with trains at Babylon. Buses will depart from the stations up to 12 minutes later than the scheduled train departure times. Customers should plan for up to 33 minutes of additional travel time.

Eastbound
Eastbound customers who normally take the 9:26 a.m., 10:27 a.m. and 11:27 a.m. trains from Babylon, will board buses instead , and should anticipate up to 23 minutes of additional travel time.

Wednesday, October 29 – Patchogue to Montauk
On Wednesday, October 29, buses will replace 11 trains that run between Patchogue and Montauk or Speonk and Montauk, including two evening rush hour trains, as well as midday and late-night trains.

Westbound
Buses will replace the 11:18 a.m. and 2:51 p.m. trains from Montauk and the 2 p.m. train from Speonk. Customers who board at Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton, Bridgehampton, Southampton, Hampton Bays, Westhampton, Speonk, Mastic-Shirley and Bellport will be able to catch buses that will connect with trains at Patchogue. Buses will depart up to one hour and 5 minutes later than scheduled train departure times. Customers should plan for up to 26 minutes of additional travel time en route to New York City.

Buses will also replace late night trains that originate in Montauk 10:38 pm and 1 a.m. (Thursday, October 30). Substitute buses will depart Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton, Bridgehampton, Southampton, Hampton Bays and Westhampton up to 39 minutes earlier than normal train times. At Speonk, customers will board westbound trains.

Eastbound Buses will replace midday trains that normally depart Patchogue at 9:16 a.m., 11:57 a.m. and 12:36 p.m. Eastbound customers should anticipate up to 41 minutes of additional travel time.

Eastbound customers on two peak trains - the 4:30 p.m. departure from Hunterspoint Avenue and the 6:17 p.m. departure from Jamaica will transfer to buses at Speonk. In addition, late night customers on the 8:53 p.m. train from Jamaica will also connect with buses at Speonk. Eastbound customers on these trains should plan for up to 37 minutes additional travel time.

Thursday, October 30 – Speonk to Montauk
On Thursday, October 30, buses will replace four midday trains that run between Speonk and Montauk.

Westbound
Buses will replace the 11:18 a.m. and 2:51 p.m. trains from Montauk. Westbound customers boarding at Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton, Bridgehampton, Southampton, Hampton Bays and Westhampton will catch buses to Speonk, where train service will be available.

Buses will depart up to one hour and 16 minutes later than scheduled train departure times. Customers should plan for up to 26 minutes of additional travel time en route to New York City.

Eastbound
Customers on the 8:52 a.m. train from Babylon and the 11:30 a.m. train from Jamaica will transfer to buses at Speonk. Please plan for up to 28 minutes of additional travel time.

Friday, October 31 – Babylon to Patchogue

On Friday, October 31, buses will replace five midday trains that operate between Babylon and Patchogue.

Westbound
Buses will replace the 9:35a.m., 10:35 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. train from Patchogue. Westbound customers boarding at Patchogue, Sayville, Oakdale, Great River, Islip and Bay Shore will catch buses that will connect with trains at Babylon. Buses will depart up to 12 minutes later than scheduled train departure times. Customers should plan for up to 33 minutes of additional travel time en route to New York City.

Eastbound
Buses will replace the 9:26 a.m. and 10:27 a.m. trains from Babylon to Patchogue. Eastbound customers should anticipate up to 23 minutes of additional travel time.
