Middle Island, NY - October 22nd, 2013 - Under the new Suffolk County Drinking Water Protection Program, Legislator Sarah Anker recently passed legislation directing the County to preserve 24 acres of land in Middle Island.  The parcel was originally slated for development of residential homes creating an even greater environmental impact in Middle Island.

“This environmentally sensitive piece of property has been designated as a Special Groundwater Protection area,” said Legislator Anker.  “Protecting our aquifer is of paramount concern, and I am fully committed to continuing my advocacy for land preservation and open space.”

“Due to its proximity to the RCA property, this particular parcel is a great addition to the County’s list of open space preserved parcels,” said former owner David Scro.  “Thanks to Legislator Anker’s persistence and negotiation efforts, we were able to finally finish the process.”

Anker was recently named a committee member of the Long Island Commission on Aquifer Protection, the Legislature’s Environmental Planning and Agriculture Committee, and the Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District Board.  Through Anker’s legislative support, the County has preserved nearly 1,900 acres of land.
