Greenport, NY - October 21st, 2013 - MTA Long Island Rail Road is pleased to announce it has extended Greenport Saturday/Sunday service through Thanksgiving weekend. The additional runs will help serve the growing needs of customers who plan to visit the beautiful North Fork during the fall months.
The service investment, which was proposed at an August 2013 public hearing, extends weekend service on the Ronkonkoma Branch to and from Greenport for approximately 10 weeks, providing service starting in early May and extending into November of each year. Prior to the proposal, weekend Greenport service ran from Memorial Day Weekend through Columbus Day weekend.
“I am very pleased that the recent decision of the MTA Board included a number of new initiatives and improved service for Long Island, including the extension of additional service to Greenport. I will continue to work with the LIRR and my fellow board members to provide much improved service to all of our communities on Long Island,” said Mitchell H. Pally, Suffolk County representative to the MTA Board.
“Throughout my career I have fought for Suffolk's East End residents to insure access to services,” said Senator Kenneth La Valle. “The restoration of service re-establishes access for residents as well as visitors to Suffolk County's scenic East End.”
Visitors to the area, and residents alike, who want to visit Long Island’s wine country and local farm stands can take a 10:35 a.m. or 3:37 p.m. train from the Ronkonkoma station to Greenport and a 1:11 p.m. and 6:11 p.m. to return
“The LIRR understands the importance of access to the East End for its customers,” said LIRR President Helena E. Williams. “Fall has become a very popular season on the North Fork. We’re glad we can provide the extra service for our customers,"
