Cold Spring Harbor, NY - October 19, 2018 - Two groups of William Floyd High School science research students recently had the opportunity to visit the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) DNA Learning Center to conduct research on isolating environmental DNA (eDNA) from water samples taken from Moriches Bay.
The first group is analyzing the biodiversity of shellfish and vertebrates in sparse and dense patches of eel grass throughout the bay; the second group is exploring the feasibility of reproducing oyster populations using eDNA and to identify how increased oyster presence influences the microbial diversity of the water.
This research was conducted in collaboration with the CSHL DNA Learning Center and the Moriches Bay Project under the direction of science research teacher, Victoria Hernandez.
