Nassau County, NY - October 19th, 2013 - Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced today that “Choices and Consequences,” her driver-education program aimed at teaching high school students about the dangers of drunk, drugged, distracted, and reckless driving, will be presented at four Nassau County high schools in the coming weeks.

“Car crashes are the number one cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years old and it is incumbent upon all of us to do whatever we can to ensure the safety of our young people on the road,” DA Rice said. “Choices and Consequences was created to show young drivers real facts, real stories, and real people. And we’re responding to changing trends, like distracted driving from smartphones and other handheld devices. By educating young drivers about the realities of the road and the consequences of poor decision making, we can reduce the number of fatalities and injuries we see each year.”

Each presentation features a 90-minute slideshow and interactive speech by a Nassau County Assistant District Attorney and a demonstration by a Nassau County Police Officer of the criminal process that drunk, drugged, and reckless drivers must go through upon arrest. The program also features testimony from a young person who has been arrested and victims whose lives have been permanently affected by drunk, drugged, distracted, or reckless driving.

DA Rice’s “Choices and Consequences program has been presented at Nassau County high schools and community organizations more than 200 times since its inception in 2006.

Upcoming presentations include:

  • Thursday, Oct. 24 – Bethpage HS at 9:10 a.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 13 – Castleton Academy HS of Oceanside at 10 a.m.
  • Thursday, Dec. 5 – Valley Stream North HS at 8:35 a.m.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 18 – Clarke HS at 8:26 a.m.
