Suffolk County and the Town of Babylon Announce the Graduation of Fourteen Students from the Department of Labor’s Pre Apprenticeship Training Program

Wyandanch, NY - October 18th, 2013 - Today, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Deputy Babylon Town Supervisor Tony Martinez and labor leaders joined to announce the successful completion of fourteen graduates of the Department of Labor’s pre-apprenticeship program in Wyandanch.  The pre-apprentice program provides students the opportunity to be introduced to the craft trades and will expand the participant's career pathway opportunities with industry-based training coupled with classroom instruction.  In addition, this program builds student’s math skills and work-readiness skills to ensure that they can compete in the job market.

The pre-apprenticeship program was formulated in collaboration with the Wyandanch Resource Center, the Town of Babylon, Electrical Training Center of Long Island and the Nassau/Suffolk Building Trades Council.

In addition to the educational opportunity the students received, they also embody a spirit of giving back.  Members of the apprentice class are donating their time to help construct a Haunted House at the Wyandanch Ambulance Corps for the children of the community and surrounding communities and helped to remodel the headquarters for Habitat for Humanity.

“I am proud that Suffolk County has joined with the Town of Babylon to provide an opportunity for Wyandanch residents to expand their skill sets and create a pathway to meaningful employment,” said County Executive Bellone. “I’d like to thank our partners in the Wyandanch Resource Center, the Electrical Training Center of Long Island and the Nassau/Suffolk Building Trades Council for making this program a reality.”

“Congratulations to the graduates,” said Dick O’Kane, President of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Nassau and Suffolk. “The Nassau Suffolk Building Trades looks forward to continue working with Suffolk County, the Town of Babylon, and the community on the creation of good union, Building Trades jobs.”

“This program is a fantastic tool for young people to gain the skills they need for today’s job market, and I thank all those that have worked hard to make it a success,” said Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer.  “I am proud of today’s graduates for taking the first step in what are sure to be promising careers and I look forward to seeing all that they accomplish in our community.”

Program Curriculum

Program Description
This program will give a student the opportunity to be introduce to the craft trades.  This program will expand the participant's career pathway opportunities with industry-based training coupled with classroom instruction.  This program will build the students literacy, math, and work-readiness skills employers desire.

Overview and Introduction to the Construction Trades

  • Apprenticeship history.
  • Ancient world.
  • Colonial America.
  • Labor laws.
  • Prevailing wage.

Student skill and ability assessment, identify areas of interest, presentation by various trade representatives.

Students define and outline goals and means and methods of achievement and write “A Plan of Action”

16 Hrs

Career Development 1

  • Identification, search, acquisition, and maintenance of resources.
  • Continuation of  “A Plan of Action”

4 Hrs

Career Development 2

  • Employer expectations.
  • Employee code of  conduct.
  • Employee responsibility.
  • Customer interaction.
  • Writing a resume.
  • Using “A Plan of Action” along with resource development to obtain a apprenticeship position.
  • Management of time.
  • Using and filling in a time card.
  • Overcoming obstacles to employment, such as Day Care, No Drivers License, No High School Diploma, Criminal Record, Recovering alcohol or drug addiction.
  • How to act during an interview.
  • Development of a portfolio for diplomas, resumes, certificates, accomplishments.
  • Development of a portfolio for goals and objectives met.

24 Hrs

Basic Math
Students are tested for level of math ability and remedial instruction is provided as required. Basic math and algebra is required and directed towards the needs of the construction trades. GED instruction provided as required as a separate course.

42 Hrs

Students are required to take the United States Department of Labor OSHA 10 course as a asis to job safety and the receipt of the OSHA 10 certification, which is a plus on hiring decisions.

Ladders and Scaffolds
The students will be exposed to the particular hazards of and safe use and maintenance of ladders and scaffolds

8 Hrs.

Fall Protection
The students will be exposed to the particular hazards of and safe use and maintenance of Fall protection equipment., when it is required and boundary control and access.

10 Hrs

Traffic Control

  • Students are provided with an OSHA approved course on traffic control and flagging.
  • Students practice in real world environments on actual job sites. Students will be exposed to DOT approved safety vests, hard hats, and use and care of flagging and safety cones.

6 Hours

Basic First Aid and CPR
Students shall gain an understanding of basic first aid principles, evaluation of injuries, and the order of treatment.. Students will be able to understand the importance of critical numbers for EMS, the location of first aid equipment and how to access and use it. The students will be able to give CPR and utilize any equipment associated with it. 
10 Hrs

Health and Safety
Students will understand the requirements for and control of health and safety as t relates to themselves, co-workers, and customers. They will understand the requirements for dealing with and treating bio hazards such as blood, and in the treating of victims. They will understand how to mitigate the propagation of communicable diseases, including colds, viruses, and bacterium.
4 Hrs

Field Exposure with Internship and Classroom Discussion
Students will visit commercial and residential job sites, including Habitat for Humanity homes, and United Way as an exposure to various trades and the interaction and coordination on job sites with hands-on experience. Students will be given the opportunity to work with the trade choices to make a final decision on the trade of their choice.

Total   300 Hours.
