Weather Alert

LIGHT SNOW AND SPOTTY LIGHT FREEZING RAIN POSSIBLE THIS EVENING As temperatures slowly rise this evening, light snow should quickly change over to rain across Long Island, New York City and the suburbs just north and west, and across coastal and southeastern Connecticut, with at least a coating of accumulation, and as much as an inch farther away from the coast. As precipitation mixes with and changes to rain, road temperatures in these areas may still be below freezing even as air temperatures slowly rise to the mid and upper 30s, and a light glaze of ice may be possible on untreated surfaces. So plan on slippery conditions this evening even as temperatures slowly rise.

Elmont, NY - October 14th, 2013 - Fourth Squad detectives report the arrest of a homeless man from Hempstead for an Assault and Robbery that occurred on October 13, 2013 at 3:12 am in Elmont.

According to detectives, while walking with a friend on Meacham Avenue in the vicinity of Hempstead Turnpike, the 43 year old male victim was approached by James Howley, 46, of Hempstead. Howley, after persistently asking and being given a dollar, observed that the victim had additional money in his wallet and demanded that he be given more. When the victim refused, Howley pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed and slashed the victims face, neck, chest and hands. The victim, in an effort to stop the defendant, located a pipe on the ground and struck Howley with it. Howley then fled the scene eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike.

The victim, who was seriously injured with numerous lacerations and stab wounds, was transported in a private auto to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. While at the hospital with police at the scene, the victim, who observed that the defendant had also responded to the hospital for treatment, pointed him out to police. Howley was then taken into custody without incident.

A subsequent investigation by detectives revealed that after fleeing the incident with the victim, Howley, at 3:54 am, was responsible for throwing a brick through the store front glass window at Smart Star Gas Station, located at 740 Hempstead Turnpike, Franklin Square.

Howley is charged with Assault 1st Degree, two (2) counts of Attempted Robbery 1st Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree and Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree. He will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 10/14/2013.
