Homeless Man Arrested After Stealing Tip Jar from Jericho Store

Jericho, NY - October 12, 2016 - Second Squad detectives report the arrest of a homeless Hicksville man for an incident that occurred on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at 4:10 pm in Jericho.

According to detectives, Haile Watson, 39, homeless, while inside H Mart, 336 North Broadway, walked up to the counter area, took a tip jar containing an unknown amount of money and fled the store. An employee who observed the theft, followed Watson and called 911.

Bureau of Special Operations officers responded to the area, located Watson, identified themselves and attempted to place him in custody. Watson became violent, grabbed one of the officers police shield, which was attached around his neck by a chain and ripped it from his neck.

Watson continued to resist arrest and was eventually handcuffed and placed into custody. Proceeds from the theft were found in his pockets.

Watson is charged with Robbery 3rd Degree, Petit Larceny, Obstructing Governmental Administration and Resisting Arrest. He will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 10/12/2016.
