Suffolk County Officials Join LGBT Network To Discuss Rise Of Harassment In Schools And Workplace On National Coming Out Day
Hauppauge, NY - October 11, 2017 - Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and LGBT Network President/CEO Dr. David Kilmnick will join other officials to discuss the steady rise of LGBT harassment in schools and the workplace. Recent studies report that nearly 2/3 of LGBT employees have heard discriminatory comments in the workplace and over 85 percent of LGBT students report verbal harassment in their schools. Campaigns and initiatives will be jointly announced to tackle the rising bullying and harassment that LGBT families are facing on National Coming Out Day on October 11, 2017 at 1130am at the Suffolk County Legislature in Hauppauge.
National Coming Out Day Campaign engages communities to take a stand against the discrimination, violence, harassment, and bullying of LGBT people by coming out in support of safe spaces where LGBT people live, learn, work, play, and pray. Over 250,000 Long Islander’s from businesses, schools, churches and synagogues, athletic leagues, government and others are participating to stand together in support of LGBT individuals, students and workers to come out for safe spaces.
The LGBT Network is a home and voice for LGBT people, their families and support systems throughout Long Island and in New York City. The LGBT Network’s four community centers in Woodbury, Bay Shore, Sag Harbor, and Queens, help LGBT people to be themselves, connect with others, get healthy, and be empowered. The LGBT Network has a 24-year history of pioneering advocacy and change to promote safe spaces, not only within its programs, but in schools, workplaces, organizations, and in the greater community.
