Cops: Two Busted in Freeport after Verbal Confrontation Esclates into Gunfire

Freeport, NY - October 10, 2018 - The First Squad reports the Arrest of two individuals for an incident that occurred on Tuesday, October 09, 2018 at 1:42 a.m. in Freeport.
 
According to detectives, two subjects got into a verbal argument at a residence located on Lena Ave. One of the subjects, Melquawn Abernathy, 25, of Westbury, kicked in the front door of the residence, attempting to gain entry.
 
The second subject, homeowner Justise Jones, 37, retrieved his shotgun and fired one round at the subject, striking the ground and eventually landing across the street in the exterior shingles of a residence. A family was present in the house at the time of the incident, including two juveniles. No injuries were reported.
 
Police responded and placed both subjects under arrest without incident. When approached, police observed defendant Abernathy throw a clear plastic bag containing marijuana on the floor.
 
Melquawn Abernathy is charged with Criminal Trespass 2nd Degree and Criminal Possession of Marijuana. He will be arraigned on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at First District Court, Hempstead.
 
Justise Jones is charged with Assault 1st Degree, two counts on Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. He will be arraigned on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at First District Court, Hempstead.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
