Village of Hempstead to Host Nonpartisan Voter Education Workshop

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  10. October 2016

Hempstead, NY - October 7, 2016 - The Village of Hempstead will be hosting its first-ever Nonpartisan Voter Education Workshop in Kennedy Park on Thursday, October 13, 2016 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. The purpose of this event is to increase government accessibility by providing a practical, nonpartisan and educational forum while teaching the public about their voting rights and New York State’s electoral process. The event is free to the public, and attendees will be able to register to vote during the event.

“This free, nonpartisan workshop is an opportunity for residents who have questions about how to register to vote and other facets of the voting process to get answers,” said Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne J. Hall, Sr. “Adam Gitlin will provide eligible voters with the knowledge they need heading into this crucial election season.”

Presenter Adam Gitlin, Esq., of the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law, will be leading an interactive presentation instructing residents on how to register to vote, voting rights, documentation necessary on election day, how to use the ballot and how to obtain an absentee ballot leading up to election day. Following the presentation, Mr. Gitlin will answer all residents’ questions about the voting process during a question and answer session.

“Voting is one of our most cherished civil rights and participation in government is one of the great pillars of democracy,” said Mr. Gitlin. “I’m honored to work with the Village of Hempstead to help residents navigate the voting registration process in order to ensure the community’s voices are heard.”

The League of Women Voters of Nassau County will be assisting to help voters register both in person and via www.vote411.org. Vote411 is a nonpartisan voter’s guide created by a unique partnership between The League of Women Voters of Nassau County and Google. Through the website, voters can see the candidates on their ballots, compare candidates’ positions side-by-side and print a “ballot” indicating preferences so voters can make informed decisions on Election Day.

“In today’s constant, 24/7 media cycle of partisan news, our goal in helping share the vote411.org website is to give voters an educational, completely nonpartisan tool with which to make informed voting decisions,” said Deputy Mayor Luis Figueroa. “We are thrilled to partner with the League of Women Voters to increase accessibility of government and lift the shroud of mystery on the voting process.”
