Written by Lon Cohen  |  08. October 2021

The Island Empanada empire grew again this summer with the newest restaurant opening in Lindenhurst. Begun over ten years ago by Sachem High School graduates Roy and Kathy Pelaez, this is their ninth location serving empanadas with a Puerto Rican flair.

Empanadas on the menu include their traditional beef (carne tradicional), with secret sofrito sauce ($3.49), BBQ chicken (pollo a la barbacoa), which is shredded chicken, barbeque sauce, bacon and mozzarella cheese ($3.49), chipotle beef (carne chipotle), made from ground beef, smokey chipotle peppers, sweet peppers, onion, and garlic ($3.49), and many more on the menu.

They also have seafood and vegetable empanadas. It is almost all empanadas except for their side like yellow rice and beans (small $3.99, large $7.99), sweet plantains (small $3.99, large $7.99), and mini loaded potato balls with seasoned mashed potatoes, bacon, cheddar and sour cream and scallions ($5.99).

On Google Reviews, user Tremtwo gave it five stars.

“I absolutely love Island Empanada and I was so excited when I heard they were opening up one in Lindenhurst,” Tremtwo wrote. “As always the food was awesome! I always have to get the Mini Mac and Cheese balls and my absolute favorites the Spinach Feta and Spicy Cheese empanadas.”

Jeanine Rohrle said that she loved it.

“Had a great experience today for lunch,” she wrote. “The empanadas and the yellow rice were delicious. The staff is courteous and very helpful, and the store is very clean. Will definitely be going back!”
