A heavily wooded parcel of land that encompases two small wetlands was purchased by Suffolk County and the Town of Brookhaven to be preserved for open space. The 110-acre property known as the Pheasant Meadow complex, according to a statement released by Brookhaven Town, preserves tidal wetlands, old fields, forests, a salt pond, and freshwater wetlands.

 

“It is an important acquisition which helps to complete the protection of the complex and helps to maintain the rural atmosphere of East Moriches,” the statement said.

 

The County and Town partnered to preserve the ecologically significant property that is adjacent to New York State owned lands and will be managed by the Town of Brookhaven. (see above outlined in red.)

 

The purchase price was $400,000 for which the Town contributed 30% or $120,000.

 

“The protection of this property has been a longstanding priority for the Town of Brookhaven,” said Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. “We have been trying to acquire the parcel for nearly twenty years and I am very pleased we were finally able to secure its permanent protection.”

 

According to Town Councilman Dan Panico said the land is the last piece of nearly 120 acres of contiguous bayfront open space preserved.

 

“I am committed to continuing the efforts to preserve property for the environment and future generations,” he said.
