Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued two men who swam to a remote island after their boat sank in Babylon.

Babylon, NY - October 7th, 2013 - Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued two men who swam to a remote island after their boat sank in Babylon.

Paul Salentino and John Rose left to go clamming aboard a 14-foot motorized boat from the East Islip Marina at 1:30 p.m. yesterday. When they didn’t return from fishing, Salentino’s mother went to the marina where she found their unoccupied vehicle at 2:58 a.m. and called police.

Officers aboard Marine X-Ray and Marine 1 went in search of the men in the Great South Bay. The maritime conditions were foggy with zero visibility at the start of the search. After sunrise, Officers Don Moore and Anthony Ruggiero located Salentino and Rose on a remote island in Babylon at 7:30 a.m.

The men told the officers they were clamming in the Oak Island Channel in Babylon when the waters became choppy and overflowed into the boat causing it to sink at approximately 7:15 p.m. They swam to a nearby island.

Salentino, 36, of Holbrook and Rose, 51, of Ronkonkoma were treated at the scene. The U.S. Coast Guard assisted Suffolk Police in the search efforts.
