Six Things to Do in Riverhead

Sitting between the North and South forks, the hamlet of Riverhead offers plenty in the way of eating, drinking, shopping and sightseeing. Start your family adventure or cultural journey with any of these six suggestions below.

 

Take in a show at Suffolk Theater

 

This theater’s mission is to establish the cinema/playhouse tradition in downtown Riverhead. A restored 1930s art-deco venue concerts, cabarets, and theater events happening all year round. Click here for their calendar of events.

 

Visit the Long Island Aquarium

 

This aquarium boasts one of the largest all-living coral reef displays in the hemisphere, a 120,000-gallon shark tank, year-round sea lion shows, African Penguins, Marmosets, numerous touch tanks and more than 100 exhibits including a butterflies, bugs & birds exhibit. Named a Top 10 Aquarium for Children by Parents Magazine. Open daily from 10am to 5pm year-round.

 

Have a beer at a local brewery

 

Craft beer on Long Island has exploded. Moustache Brewing Company and Long Ireland Brewery both make Riverhead their home and welcome you to tilt a mug in their tasting rooms.

 

Watch cars burn rubber at Riverhead Raceway

 

According to its website, Riverhead Raceway is one of the oldest existing stock car race tracks in the U.S. it was built in 1949 and continues to this day. It’s a quarter mile asphalt, high-banked oval track and also includes a figure 8 course. Events also include demolition derbies, truck racing, school bus racing and more. It is the only auto racing venue on Long Island.

 

Shop ‘til you drop at Tanger Outlets

 

Outdoor shopping mall with almost 150 stores and shops. Plan ahead because it gets packed during the holidays. Consists of two separate shopping centers with big brands like Nike, Abercrombie & Fitch, Coach, Eddie Bauer, Gap, H&M, Kate Spade, Lululemon, and more.

 

East a Bison Burger at Tweeds

 

It’s one of the oldest restaurants on the North Fork and offers an experience you can’t get many other places, Bison meat Burgers. They also offer full lunch and dinner menus.
