Long Island Aquarium Commemorates Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Honor of Jelly the Otter

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  02. October 2017

Riverhead, NY - October 2, 2017 - In October, the Long Island Aquarium is going PINK in support of Jelly, their North American River Otter. Earlier this year, Jelly’s devoted caregivers noticed a small lump developing near her left mammary gland. A team of veterinarians scheduled an exam and discovered that she had a tumor. She underwent surgery to remove the gland and the tumor, which was unfortunately determined to be malignant. Jelly came through the surgery without any complications and has been healing nicely.

In support of Jelly and to honor all those affected by this disease, the Aquarium is planning a Think Pink Weekend on October 14th and 15th. Guests who visit that Saturday or Sunday and wear pink will get 20% off their Aquarium admission. The Aquarium will also solicit donations for the entire month of October, to be distributed tothe North Fork Breast Health Coalition. This local organization provides free services and financial support to survivors and those fighting breast cancer in the community. Guests can find out more about this organization at northforkbreasthealth.org.

At age 11, Jelly is on the older side for her species, but her caregivers are hoping that she has many more years with them at the Long Island Aquarium. She will receive the best care and welfare possible and the staff will make sure she is thriving and comfortable for the rest of her days.  You can visit Jelly, along with her son Stark, at the Otter Falls exhibit.
