Nassau County Police Dept: Brooklyn Man Arrested in East Garden City for Grand Larceny

East Garden City, NY - October 2nd, 2013 - Crimes Against Property Squad detectives report the arrest of a Brooklyn man for grand larceny that occurred in East Garden City on Saturday, 09/28/13 at 9:00 A.M.

According to detectives, after answering an add on Craig’s List for a Mercedes automobile for sale for $12,500, defendant Derrick Boothe, 24, of 1420 E. 95th St.,  met with the owner and left a $1,000 deposit for the vehicle.  On Monday, 09/30/13 the defendant met with the owner again in order to sign a bill of sale for the Mercedes.  The defendant paid the owner with $10,140 in U.S. Postal Money Orders.  The owner informed the defendant that he wanted to verify the money orders with the bank before releasing the title and vehicle.  The owner took the money orders to the Post Office where the U.S. Postal Inspectors were notified.  Further investigation revealed that the money orders were purchased with debit cards from various banks accounts that had been funded with fraudulent checks.  

On Monday, 10/01/13, when the defendant arrived to pick up the vehicle, the owner refunded his money as well as the money orders.  Detectives were at scene and placed the defendant under arrest.  The banking institutions sustained a financial loss in excess of $5,900.

Boothe is being charged with Grand Larceny 3rd Degree, Defraud 1st Degree and will be arraigned on Wednesday, 10/02/13 in First District Court, Hempstead.
