Dix Hills, NY - Sept. 28, 2018 - The Long Island Arts Alliance announced the 2019 Long Island Scholar-Artist award winners and Award of Merit recipients at a kickoff event on September 12, 2018, at Long Island University’s Tilles Center. Half Hollow Hills is proud to have three of its students recognized as Award of Merit recipients, for their excellence in academics and in the areas of music, visual arts, dance, theater, or media arts.

The Award of Merit recipients from Half Hollow Hills are:

  • John DiGiorgio, Theater, High School West
  • Rebecca Farber, Media Arts, High School East
  • Rachel Goldsmith, Visual Arts, High School East
To receive this designation, students must be nominated by their school for representing the highest level of artistic excellence, submit a portfolio of their work for consideration by the selection committee, and demonstrate superior academic achievement with an un-weighted grade point average of 90 or above.

“We are so proud of these extremely talented artists, and they are all very deserving of this honor,” said Dr. Darlene Lilla, the district’s director of fine arts. “Each of these students has been a shining example of the opportunities we give our students in arts education at Half Hollow Hills.”

The Scholar-Artist awards, given by the LIAA in conjunction with Newsday and the New York Community Bank Foundation, are presented to 20 Long Island high school seniors who are featured in Newsday over the course of the 10-month school year.  The Award of Merit is given to an additional 20 students who receive a certificate at the LIAA Gala and are listed on the Newsday website.
