Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Community Advisory Council

Written by Legislator Anker's Office  |  28. September 2018

Upton, NY - Sept. 28, 2018 - On Thursday, September 13th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the 20th anniversary celebration of the Brookhaven National Laboratory Community Advisory Council (CAC). The CAC was formed in 1998 to advise the Laboratory Director on selected issues, particularly on the environment, safety, and health, while representing a diverse range of interests and values of individuals and groups who are interested in or affected by the actions of the Laboratory.

“I commend Brookhaven National Laboratory for providing an open dialogue with the community through the creation of the Community Advisory Council,” said Legislator Anker. I first joined the CAC over 17 years ago as the President of the Community and Environment Coalition, a not-for-profit organization I founded to address health and environmental concerns in our community. In addition to a general open dialogue, the members of the council provide valuable insight and recommendations to the lab regarding remediation, support for new technologies, and outreach to the community.”

The CAC consists of representatives from 26 local business, civic, education, environment, employee, government, and health organizations. The CAC sets its own agenda, brings forth issues important to the community, and works to provide consensus recommendations to Laboratory management. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Laboratory’s Berkner Hall. Meetings are open to the public and interested community members are encouraged to attend.
