Woman Caught in Gun Crossfire While Waiting at Traffic Light in Hempstead, One Arrest

The Major Case Bureau reports the arrest of a Hempstead man for Attempted Murder which occurred on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at 12:03 a.m. in Hempstead.

Hempstead, NY - September 25, 2016 - The Major Case Bureau reports the arrest of a Hempstead man for Attempted Murder which occurred on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at 12:03 a.m. in Hempstead.

According to the Gang Investigation Squad, the defendant Darren B. Devane, 29, of Hempstead, was at the corner of Terrace Avenue and Bedell Street when he fired several gunshots at an unknown subject who was on the southeast corner of Terrace Avenue and Bedell Street. The unknown subject also fired several shot towards Devane.

A 32 year old female victim was stopped in her Honda Accord at the traffic signal at the intersection when a bullet penetrated her windshield causing glass fragments to strike the victim causing lacerations to her arm and forehead. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries. Devane fled into his apartment building where detectives located him a short time later and placed him under arrest. A loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun was recovered from the apartment. The second subject fled in an unknown direction.

Devane is charged with Murder 2nd degree (Attempt), Assault 1st degree (Attempt), Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd degree, Reckless Endangerment 1st degree and Violation of Parole. He will be arraigned on Monday, September 26, 2015 at First District Court in Hempstead.
