East Islip, NY - September 24, 2015 - On July 17th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey (R-Lindenhurst) joined with his colleagues and thousands of running enthusiasts from near and far to participate in the inaugural Suffolk County Marathon. The marathon both began and concluded at the bucolic Heckscher State Park, with countless friends and families of the runners gathered at the finish line near the Great South Bay.
The marathon was conceived to not only assist our local veterans, but to also help boost the economy and bring more awareness to everything that is great about Suffolk County and its residents. The proceeds of the event will ultimately be dispersed to various veterans services organizations across the county, under the guidance of a soon-to-be formed advisory committee.
“This was a tremendous undertaking, and it was certainly worth the effort,” said McCaffrey. “We need to do as much as we can to make sure our veterans get the services that they need. Also, events like this serve as a reminder to all of us that freedom is not free. I am confident that the Suffolk County Marathon will grow in size and prestige every year, and will continue to serve those who served for us.”
Suffolk County has the distinction of having the highest veteran population in New York, which comes with a tremendous amount of both benefits and challenges. Fortunately, Suffolk County has made a name for itself as a trendsetter with respect to caring for this special community, and the Suffolk County Marathon will certainly help to meet a variety of needs.
For those interested in learning more about the range of services that Suffolk County provides to its veterans, they are strongly encouraged to visit its very own Veterans Service Agency online.
Legislator McCaffrey represents Suffolk County’s 14th Legislative District which encompasses the Village of Lindenhurst, Babylon Village, the hamlets of West Babylon and North Lindenhurst, portions of Copiague, North Babylon, and Babylon’s barrier beach communities.
