Long Island’s unemployment rate was 3.9 percent in August, up 0.2 percentage points from a year ago, but still at a near historic low.

Nassau County’s rate increased 0.2 percentage points to 3.7 percent, while Suffolk County’s rate also increased by 0.2 percentage points to 4.0 percent, all according to data from the New York State Department of Labor. 

Long Island’s rate was well below New York State’s 4.2 percent rate and New York City’s 4.3 percent, but slightly above the national rate of 3.8 percent.

Long Beach City had the lowest rate in Nassau (and all of Long Island) at only 3.2 percent, followed by the Town of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay each at 3.5 percent.

Hempstead Village had the highest rate in Nassau at 4.8 percent, followed by Freeport Village at 4.5 percent and Valley Stream Village at 4.4 percent.

Southampton Town had the lowest rate in Suffolk County at 3.3 percent, followed by Huntington Town at 3.5 percent and Smithtown Town at 3.6 percent.

Babylon Town had the highest rate in Suffolk at 4.5 percent, followed by Lindenhurst Village at 4.3 percent and both Islip Town and Brookhaven Town at 4.2 percent.
