Kayaker Rescued from Long Island Sound

Riverhead, NY - Sepetember 20, 2014 - Suffolk County Police, in a joint effort with the United States Coast Guard, rescued a kayaker in distress in the Long Island Sound this morning.
 
Martha Bailey, 60, of Cheshire, Connecticut, was kayaking in the Long Island Sound at approximately 10:50 a.m. when her kayak tipped over and she was thrown in the water. Bailey made a radio notification and activated a position beacon, and the Suffolk County Police Department and the United States Coast Guard initiated a search effort.
 
Aviation Section Officers Frank Cooper and Richard Davin, along with Flight Paramedic Peter Leonard, responded in a Suffolk County Police helicopter and were able to locate Bailey at 11:08 a.m. hanging on to her kayak and wearing a lifejacket. The helicopter crew directed Marine Delta and the Coast Guard vessel to Bailey’s location. Both units arrived and Bailey was taken aboard the Coast Guard vessel to their New Haven station for medical evaluation.
