Uniondale School Hosts Regional NBA Math Hoops Training

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  21. September 2016

Uniondale, NY - September 20, 2016 - More than 40 educators from throughout the region, including 24 from the Uniondale School District, recently came together to learn how to implement “NBA Math Hoops” in the classroom. NBA Math Hoops is a fast-paced basketball board game that allows students to learn fundamental math skills through direct engagement with real-world basketball statistics of students’ favorite NBA and WNBA players. Teachers worked with student-volunteers to learn this revolutionary new teaching tool in order to enhance mathematics education.

The NBA Math Hoops curriculum is tied to Common Core State Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills, with the goals of improving students’ basic math skills, understanding of statistics and interpersonal skills, all of which promote effective collaboration with their peers. According to the U.S. Department of Education, students who succeed in math have a better chance of graduating from high school, attending college and pursuing meaningful careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

Earlier this year, Northern Parkway Elementary School Assistant Principal Sheilah Jefferson-Isaac attended a summit of hand-picked educators from across the country to directly shape the future of the NBA Math Hoops program, as well as other educational initiatives designed to help students succeed in school. She is now spearheading this effort to develop mathematics education right here on Long Island.
