Mt. Sinai Harbor Repairs on the Way

Written by Legislator Anker's Office  |  21. September 2016

Mount Sinai, NY - September 20, 2016 - After years of advocating for repairs to the Mount Sinai Harbor jetties, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker is proud to announce that New York State and the Town of Brookhaven have acquired funding to repair the town-owned jetties which will allow the County to dredge the harbor. The dilapidated jetties have caused strong currents in the harbor and the inlet, which has made it dangerous for boaters and has caused coastal erosion along the shoreline.

“I am pleased that after advocating for the restoration of the jetties, funding is now available for the much needed repairs,” said Legislator Anker. “Extreme storms over the past few years have caused major damage to this structure. It is imperative that the jetties be repaired to ensure the safety of residents who utilize the harbor for recreational and commercial purposes. The Mount Sinai Harbor Advisory Committee has been a strong advocate for the project, and I’d like to thank the members for their dedication and commitment.”

The repairs to the jetties will allow Suffolk County to begin dredging in Mount Sinai Harbor. Due to the disrepair of the jetties, the county dredging project was temporarily halted until the structure was mended. Upon completion of the jetty restoration, Suffolk County’s Department of Public Works will be able to return to routine dredging of the harbor. Using $2.1 million that Legislator Anker has continuously earmarked for this project, the dredging will increase the depth of the harbor and remediate coastal erosion that has occurred along the shoreline. The dredging project, in conjunction with repairs to the jetties, will make the harbor safer for recreational use, as well as allow police and emergency vessels to safely access the Long Island Sound.
