Five in Police Custody for Allegedly Stealing Dog During New Cassel Home Invasion

The Third Squad reports the arrest of five individuals for an incident that occurred on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at 11:25 p.m. in New Cassel.
 
According to detectives, third precinct officers responded to a Bond Street residence for a disturbance. Upon arrival, it was determined that a 25-year-old female victim was sleeping in her residence when a loud noise woke her up. The victim observed two males entering her residence through a rear window. One of the males attempted to take the victims pit bull. 
 
While struggling with the subject two females entered the house through a door one of the defendants had unlocked. The male defendant was able to take the dog and all four defendants exited the residence through the front door. The defendants fled southbound on Bond Street and were observed entering the backyard of 1032 Prospect Avenue. 
 
Officers responded to 1032 Prospect Avenue location and after a thorough investigation all four defendants were placed under arrest and a fifth defendant at the scene who interfered with the investigation was also placed under arrest.
 
Defendant Widmaer Innocent , 18, of 243 State Street, New Cassel is charged with Burglary 2nd Degree and Robbery 3rd Degree. Defendant Bernardson Rene, 21, of 170 Kinkel Street, New Cassel is charged with Burglary 2nd Degree. Defendant Janeth Apolinar Mercado, 25, of 1032 Prospect Avenue is charged with Burglary 2nd Degree. Defendant Anna Izabel Guevara, 23, of 1032 Prospect Avenue, is charged with Burglary 2nd Degree. Defendant Jose Apolinar, 28, of 1032 Prospect Avenue, New Cassel, is charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree.
 
All five defendants will be arraigned on Friday, September 19, 2025 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
