North Babylon, NY - Sepetember 18, 2014 - Ms. Jennifer Kreuscher, a first grade teacher in the North Babylon Union Free School District, has been named the 2014 recipient of the Better Beginnings Award.  The award, which is sponsored by the Board of Regents, celebrates the life and career of Helen Bach Moss, a young New York State educator who passed away in 1988.  It recognizes elementary teachers who are skilled at engaging young minds and nurturing relationships with elementary school students.

A prize of $1,000 and a plaque of recognition were presented to Ms. Kreuscher by Regent Roger Tilles, and members of the New York State Education Department during a ceremony held at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School on September 17, 2014.  Award-founder Michael Moss also presented Ms. Kreuscher with a gift.  Ms. Kreuscher was selected as the 2014 Better Beginnings Award recipient after consideration of nominations submitted throughout the State.

Ms. Kreuscher has been described as hardworking, knowledgeable and dedicated, with a special love for students.  In more than 20 years in the classroom, she has been an excellent role model, helping students understand that giving back to the community is an important part of their education.  She sets an example for her students by organizing or taking part in programs like the “MGV Mentor Program”, “Math-a-Thon for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital” and “Hearts for Haiti”.

Runners-up for the award were Ms. Angie Cox, a teacher at Dundee Elementary School in the Dundee Central School District, and Ms. Kathleen Taylor, a teacher at Delaware Academy Elementary School in Delhi Central School District.

Applications for the Better Beginnings Award are available in October of each year from the Teacher Development Programs Unit of the New York State Education Department here.
