The Grand Republic ferry, returning from Connecticut to Port Jefferson, was the subject of a massive police search after someone on board reported overhearing a group of men talking about a bomb on the vessel, according to a Port Jefferson Village official and the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD).

 

Ferry service was shut down as police searched the vessel.

 

SCPD responded to the scene at about 1pm on Wednesday after a 911 caller reported that a passenger had been overhead discussing the potential to put a bomb on the boat, according to a police spokesperson.

 

Passengers disembarked the ferry in Port Jefferson and after interviewing passengers, police determined it to be a misunderstanding.

 

After a search of the ferry no explosives were found.

 

Port Jefferson Village Constables also provided support, helping to direct traffic and secure the scene.

 

SCPD confirmed that no one was arrested and that the incident has been deemed non-criminal in nature.
