In honor of the 20th Anniversary of September 11th, 2001, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone hosted beautification projects for various 9/11 Memorials across the county to give residents the opportunity to honor this day in our nation’s history. The projects aimed to beautify memorials for this year's 20th Anniversary, and educate youth and community members on this important milestone.

“For the 20th anniversary of September 11th, 2001, it was important to remember that we have not forgotten the lives lost and those that were forever changed on that fateful morning,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “Beautifying these memorials across the county is not only another chance to help our community heal, but also to teach our children about the day that undoubtedly changed our nation and to solidify our promise to never forget.”

Tammy Severino, Interim President & CEO, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, said: “ Girl Scouts of Suffolk County is honored to have been asked to participate in the County’s important activities commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States. We believe strongly in our girls learning about U.S, history and participating in civics programs. The 9/11 attacks impacted our community, our state, and our nation. We are grateful to County Executive Bellone and his team for inviting GSSC to be a part of these important events.”

Each of the 9 locations included a beautification and clean-up component. Tasks included cleanup of weeds or discarded items, planting, addition of lighting, stepping stones, and more. Home Depot graciously sponsored these events, providing the materials needed. Volunteers included County employees, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Home Depot Staff, and various community organizations.

The Home Depot Foundation is deeply committed to serving veterans and local communities. In addition to the Foundation’s donation of supplies, Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate volunteer force, was onsite to assist with the cleaning, planting and other beautification efforts.
