Written by Long Island  |  12. September 2019

Are you considering growing your family through adoption? Are you an adoptive parent? Attend the Long Island Chapter of the Adoptive Parents Committee's first meeting of the fall season on Saturday, September 21 at The Church of St. Jude at 3606 Luftberry Ave. in Wantagh. The meeting is an opportunity to network with other pre- and post-adoptive families and participate in workshops run by social workers and adoption-related professionals.

The Adoptive Parents Committee (APC) is a non-profit group which supports families at all stages of the adoption journey. Teens are also invited to attend the meeting.

There will be a new member welcome at 6:30 p.m. followed by a general meeting at 7:15 p.m. At 8 p.m. attendees can participate in breakout workshops including:

Successful Independent and Agency Adoption – This pre-adopt workshop will be given by adoptive parents Joy and Michael Goldstein, Co-Founders of Forever Families Through Adoption a not-for-profit, adoption placement agency and resource center. They will explain the differences between private agency and private independent adoption, discuss the approval process and how to find birthparents, share “how to” tips and more.

Exploring School Issues – This post-adopt workshop will explore the unique challenges adoptees face in school such as assignments related to genetics and when/if your child should share his/her story. Guests are invited to bring their questions.

Teen and Young Adult Chat Support Group – Teens and young adults can meet and make friends with other adopted kids. A licensed mental health counselor will moderate.

Support Group for Parents of Children School Age and Older – This guided support group will teach parents how to support their children through empathy.

The APC is the oldest adoptive parent group in North America and there are four chapters: Long Island, New York City, New Jersey and the Connecticut/Hudson Region. In addition to educational events, the organization holds recreational family activities such as picnics and holiday parties. Visit the APC website for more information on the organization and the Long Island chapter page or Facebook page for additional details about the September 21 meeting.
